Recently I had the opportunity to spend a number of days at Golden Plains Council in Victoria, conducting unsealed roads training for both operational and management staff.

During this time, we dedicated two full days to fieldwork with grading crews, examining current grading techniques and exploring alternative approaches. Additionally, we had the privilege of collaborating with the council’s skilled grader staff, guiding newer operators through the process of medium grading, and documenting the steps for future training use.

Finally, we witnessed firsthand the enhanced road performance achieved by incorporating better material into a poorly performing road after grading. Together with the team, we developed costing scenarios to explore how more of these practices could be implemented to progressively enhance the road network over time.
