Great week at Upper Hunter Shire Council NSW running unsealed roads training for both operational and management staff.

Operational highlight was to see one of the best examples of gravel retrieval from the shoulders of the roads incorporated into the grading process. This approach was seen consistently across the crews and in some cases was able to add up to 60mm depth of gravel back onto the roads, thus increasing its life by a minimum 6 years. The challenge nationally is dealing with the grass that comes with the retrieval and the grading staff’s technique was a very innovative way to achieve this. Well done in your approach.

The management of the unsealed road network at Upper Hunter is a mature system using a road class frequency-based approach for the programming and scheduling of grading works.  In the training we showed how using photographic and electronic condition assessments can be used to optimise the list of deliverable works.  Also, we completed a benchmark of current practices against our national database for costs and services, plus the development of budget model and resource checks to ensure current services can be funded into the future.

Thank you to Rag Upadhyaya and his team for the success of this training course.
