Seriously impressed by West Wimmera Council’s commitment to improvement in rural Victoria.

I’ve just finished three weeks in the field delivering one of the most comprehensive unsealed roads workshops I’ve been involved in.

Together, we worked through practical options to improve unsealed road performance, including moisture conditioning approaches, material selection, gravel shoulder recovery using grid rollers and tractor reclaimers, resheeting, and medium‑ to heavy‑grading processes.

We also trialled water‑truck application methods using different combinations of bar and fan use, tested different materials across varying terrains, and undertook dust suppression trials — applying lessons learned from more than 20 years of field experience.

There were strong engagement and a genuine willingness to improve outcomes by all involved.

Shout‑out to Thea Griffin for leading this initiative, with support from Director Brendan Pearce, and the team of operators and supervisors. Well done to everyone involved.

We covered a lot of important ground, so I’ll share three follow‑up posts over the coming week to dig a bit deeper into some of the trials.
