Why Waratah–Wynyard’s Approach Could Redefine Unsealed Road Standards

Waratah–Wynyard Council is demonstrating what’s possible when innovation, skill, and best practice come together in unsealed road management.

Through recent on‑ground works, the Waratah–Wynyard team has been pushing boundaries in road maintenance by focusing on:

✔ Optimum moisture control prior to spreading, achieving superior compaction outcomes.

✔ Recognition of plant capability gaps, with water cart capacity (7,000 L vs the 12,000 L industry standard) clearly identified for future budget consideration.

✔ Steel drum slurry finishing, delivering extended pavement life — the best I have seen in the industry.
✔ Upskilling new operators in industry best‑practice grading techniques, strengthening succession capability and quality.

✔ Precision defect‑repair trials solving long‑standing industry issues — more on this in an upcoming post.

Waratah–Wynyard Council in Tasmania is setting a strong benchmark for longer‑lasting unsealed roads through its commitment to smarter methods, practical trials, and continuous improvement.

Shout‑out to Adam Whitfield for leading this initiative at Council, to Dylan Smith for coordinating the on‑ground trials, and to the team of operators who were part of the initiative. Well done, Council.
