Banana Shire Council is leading the way in unsealed road maintenance with one of the most efficient scheduling systems in the industry.
Crews follow a structured and published sequence of roads in each region, while urgent repairs are managed by quick-response team—ensuring minimal disruption and maximum productivity. Roads are graded at intervention thresholds to avoid overservicing and maintain efficiency.
During our recent workshop, we built on an already strong foundation. A key outcome was the development of clear grading standards to guide all work types—medium, heavy, and full resheeting. These standards include:
✅ Gravel shoulder recovery, to extend the longevity of gravel material—the most expensive component of the road.
✅ Expected grader passes by activity type.
✅ Metres graded per hour, used as a KPI to reflect performance by activity type.
✅ Water volume per kilometre, ensuring optimal moisture levels for compaction and long-term road performance.
These standards help align crews, supervisors, and council around a shared understanding of what quality looks like in practice.
A huge shoutout to Leesa Millar – along with the entire team – for pulling this together. Excellent work from start to finish.
